Rather he had to go and join the waiting taxi queue. I was frustrated at this stupidity, and during the week I noticed the same taxi cabs and drivers waiting in the queue. Taxis are for the guest's convenience, and I ended up having to wait another 10 mins or so while the driveway cleared to get one of the waiting cabs. I expect this in other countries but not Australia.
This usually happens at airports where some taxi's have been waiting awhile to pick up passengers. It wouldn't be fair to the waiting cabbies. While I agree the hotel should do what is best for their customers, the hotel may worry that cabs simply will avoid the hotel and having a long line for taxi's might be worse.
