There's been a lengthy thread on this a while back over on TravelBuzz.
One point of view is that the employer is expecting their employee to arrive rested and relaxed and ready for work. This won't necessarily be the case if he travels in Y with his kids.
In this case, it sounds like the OP is travelling on holiday anyway, so probably the argument does not apply, but employers might not see it this way. Some employers may even ban the practice completely due to abuse as I've described.
