I guess the issue of standby is that you cannot change routing thus cannot get next ORD-HKG flight within 24 hours of original departure (since its exactly 24 hrs). I assume you and the phone agent discussed SDC with alternate routing and non came up with a reasonable fee (fare adjustment).

If you have to pay $1K then pay it because extra time with your grandmother appears important to you; however please also consider whether its cheaper to book a new one-way ticket to HKG. Safe travels.
