Ironically, despite the regular bagging that QF gets on forums and the Aussie press, both times I have been in the OPs position (once in F, once in J) they have proactively contacted me and had a solution ready - in one case to a non OW airline. Which frankly I feel is appropriate for premium pax.
BA have put me on LH earlier this year (and QF put me on EK a few years ago) too, and AF, RO and all sorts before. The phone agents don't always have the authority to do this though. However, QF have also flat refused to put me on another carrier as well.
