Absolutely the right thing to do. The agent you speak to will have had a day of grumpy people... if you are polite and clear about what you would like (and have just a little more knowledge than the average traveller) then you will be a pleasure for them to deal with...

I was seriously put in my place (in a very professional friendly way) by a CSD DME-LHR a couple of weeks ago. In a conversation about the iPad, I noticed that my CIV was now a few notches over 50 - and I mentioned that I was beginning to become more of a "proper" Gold... He told me that I was probably somewhere about 30th in terms of CIV on his flight that evening.... bubble truly popped
