What reason have they given for the cancellation?

As I understand it they have to endorse you to another airline under EU261 if they do not then you can sue them for the cost that you pay to acheive the same thing yourself. I have successfully claimed in this situation from another airline but had to go to court.

I agree though it is a shabby way to treat passengers whatever their status or class of travel.
