Second this. In fact, I've never been able to upgrade an existing booking with miles on ba.com (no matter how it was purchased) - always dealt with BA on the phone for this. This has mainly to do with the fact that I never fly on tickets issued in (or out of) my BAEC membership country, I suspect.
