I don't know the consequenses of not using the capsule. At the very least your lighter will most likely be gone when you arrive at your destination.

I hope you don't check your cigars! Those will be gone when you arrive. I'm sure some light fingered clerk in the back will scoff them.If you spend as much as my husband does on cigars I wouldn't chance it. My husband packs his travel humidor in his carry on. Don't chance it by putting this lighter in your carry on. They WILL take it from you, especially where it is spelled out on their website that it must be packed in the DOT capsule. My husband has never had any problems using his. I don't get what you mean when you say they are useless. The only way you USE it is to transport your lighter.
