Is the cancellation a done deal? I would think this could be one of those situations where the airline says they want to cancel the route because it's unprofitable in order to pressure the government into forking over more money.
If I recall, the route has never been profitable, but the government has wanted to preserve it for political reasons.
Considering LY is no longer a government-owned company, and considering the current political reality, and considering current austerity measures being taken in Israel due to the economic situation, I see absolutely no reason why the government would want to fork over any money to help this route.
