I usually leave a housekeeping tip for multi-day stays. My technique is to write
"Thank You!" on the notepad and place the note and the money on the bed, where it will be the most visible.
Placing the money on the bed, rather than on the desk, makes it clear that the guest didn't "forget" personal funds that are not intended to be a gratuity.
(The note is also the perfect place to ask for extra soap/shampoo/towels etc).
