The debacle is placing UA in your crossfire and using the

Most of the pax would've made the 12:31, and if not, their original plane, but UA proactively placed them on the next flight, just in case. Are you upset that you, as an Elite, went ahead of other distressed pax? There is no distinction in standby status if a plane is delayed (not cancelled).
Are you thus upset that you skipped the line, though there really wouldn't have been one?
