The roomette upper is not much bigger ( if any bigger ) than the bedroom upper. The only thing better in the bedroom upper is the free space next to the bed which makes the space feel less confining.
Thanks to both. I gather, then , that the upper berth in the Bedroom isn't sufficiently less confining than the upper berth in the Roomette. My wife said she had seen one of the bedrooms with a "big" bed in it, but that may be the two small lower bunks (together) in the Bedroom. For the date I was looking at, a Roomette would cost $210, the Bedroom $455 and Family Bedroom $714. Certainly not cheap and if we don't book soon the prices can well go up. Maybe we'll take the train to Seattle (even splurge on business class; we enjoyed that on Washington-Charlotte) and fly from there. We both did take the Coast Starlight from LA to Oakland so have seen the scenery once.
When we had a roomette on the Empire Builder we did not, in fact, spend much time there during the day (mainly in the observation and dining cars; the Coast Starlight also has the Parlout Car).
