That is not how it works. If they are out of cars, they are out of cars. They won't put you in whatever they have above what you rented for free.
They should have walked the OP to another rental agency if they wanted to be nice and the delay was excessive (they don't say how long they waited) but they will not give you the Mercedes instead.
