I've read that the larger 737NGs can have performance issues when heat + weight + altitude come together (think Denver) so this may be a similar situation. FWIW, I was on a 738 leaving EWR and it took forever to get off the ground. We were headed for DEN. We did a bit of an S right after takeoff (bank left/bank right). I have no experience flying out of EWR so assume it was a normal operation.
Yeah, this was a 737-9 EWR-SFO. Did the same S-curve action.
The "S" curve is part of the standard published departure. My understanding is that is for noise abatement and traffic management.
