Much more often than you think.
Redemption seats, or seats with lower booking classes, tend to become available a few months (say 3 to 4) before departure, even if there was none available 365 days out. For premium classes, you'll more likely see availability a week or two before departure.
Of course if you only want flights at peak times, you have little luck.
