It's not really a Euro-perk, it's more to do with getting people to take an inconvenient connection. Someone flying form Zurich to New York would most likely prefer to go ZRH-JFK non-stop. BA will try to make their one-stop service a lot cheaper in order to get that business. Other airlines do exactly the same thing from London.
