What I've found with EC seats is that you have to be assigned a regular seat before you can select an EC seat. If you book the flight and don't have an assigned seat, select one and save and then try again to choose an EC seat.

I've also found that I can't change my flights online when I have an EC seat selected. It tells me that I need to call in to make the change. If I move myself out of EC, then I can make the change myself.
