Seanthepilot does mention valid points, but I think if you stick to driving just during the daytime, you will probably have a pleasant experience. There are a lot of advantages having your own car. There are a lot of reasons to make a short stop like you see a popular restaurant or an interesting fruit for sale at a roadside stand. Bored by the temple that sounded great in your guidebook? No problem, just jump right back in your car.

Last month my father and I borrowed a friend's pickup and drove over 3000km touring the north and northeast. The vehicle itself was even a conversation starter as it has Sisaket plates; people in the North knew we were on a long trip.

I can't stress enough that you should drive during the daytime only. There are a lot of unmarked road hazards in rural provinces, and there are far too many drunk drivers at night.
