Couldn't choose at booking or thereafter. I even experimented after the agent gave me my EC. Went back and changed to an exit row seat on one of my flights, then tried to change back again to EC to no avail.

Using an iPad, not sure if that makes a difference, although I also tried on my Android phone and encountered the same.
