You only have leverage to ask prior to agreeing to volunteer. I've been rerouted and/or upgraded but only because I asked for it prior to volunteering.
I volunteered, then went back to the agent, I asked nicely if she could reroute from DFW/LAX to DFW/SAN. She took my name off the volunteer list and handed me a boarding pass for the next DFW/SAN flight.
