Today I am flying MCI/ORD/EWR on AA and then later tonight EWR/BOS flight on B6. The AA flight was unplanned and the B6 flight was originally due to the later departure than AA JFK/BOS. They may be asking for volunteers on the ORD/EWR flight. If I were to VDB, would AA be willing to route me direct to BOS instead of EWR. The B6 flight is a one way so there no worry about a return being canceled.
Try asking nicely when talking to the GA about your re-booking. I once had a mechanical delay that would have caused me to miss my connection and the GA was able to rebook me to my final destination (had two more AA legs and then a LAN). Got upgraded too!
