Was your flight from London to Cancun on the one ticket? (in other words not one ticket London to Miami, connecting to another ticket Miami to Cancun)

If so, then I believe that under EU regulations, AA is obliged to compensate you at a rate specified in the regulations
Perhaps others can provide more specific information?
