If you were flying domestically you may have been trying to get into a different lounge - AA domestic fly from from D Gates and there is a 'pay lounge' there.
You are right - it is a shame there is no AA Admirals lounge at the D gates as AA fly a lot of flights from there.
The lounge you can use for BA flights is in Term 3 and is a shared lounge.
