MIA (and a couple other US airports) now have the ability to have your bags transferred for you on international-international connections involving certain airlines - and BA to AA is one - as long as the bags are properly tagged. You still have to go through immigration, but you do get to skip the baggage reclaim rigamorole.
Is that new? I went BA to AA in March (and back again) and everyone I spoke to insisted that I had to go the long way round - I asked again on the way back to be told the exact same thing. I talked to immigration offices, AA ground staff and BA ground staff.
If it isn't new, then they need to educate a few more people about it.
