Fortunately, as it's LHR-MIA on BA and then on to CUN, I think that the bags may well be able to go through without having to be picked up and re-checked. I know immigration is the biggest variable here (you still need to clear immigration, exit through customs with your cabin baggage, and then re-clear security back to airside), but it does remove one step from the complexity.
