My question is as following - if I purchase the ticket (entirely in CW), and then try to upgrade - will this work for me? Will this work even though the AA flight will have BA code?
Or should I contact a TA to do this for me?

Thanks.
First of all, you will need to purchase the ticket directly from BA (either online or offline). TA bookings cannot be upgraded if they contain other airlines' segments.
You will then need to make sure that you buy either D, C or J business class fare as I and R cannot be upgraded on AA with Avios.
It does not matter if the flight is booked under the BA code, your local BAEC office will rebook onto the operating carrier and then process the upgrade.
The AA flight you want to upgrade needs to have availability in A class (which is usually not a problem).

Good luck! And let us know if you succeed.
