To add some insight to the upgrade situation, if you want to sit in FC you should jump on the miles plus copay option.
As an EXP booking six months out, I did not get the upgrade. First on the list, but this flight looks to get lots of paid traffic.

Wow, that bad? I haven't missed an u/g as a PLT on T/W/Th IAD-LAX runs, so I figured DCA-LAX would be about the same.
