If you're getting off the plane to visit family in HNL then only you can decide if that's something you want to do.
The key points regarding MNL transit:
1. UA arrives late at night so you're forced to cab into the city and sleep overnight at a hotel.
2. There are multiple different terminals and it can take 1 hour to get between them as they're spread out all around the city. If you can arrive early enough to avoid a forced overnight at MNL and if you pick one of the terminals that's close to where you are arriving, you minimize the annoyance. You might find best bet being Philippine Airlines for this scenario. Pay close attention to your connection. It will likely not be in the same terminal as where you land and each airline has its own terminal. In MNL, a "terminal" can be a low-rise structure that looks like a strip mall and is located in the middle of the city. It's bizarre. And make sure to figure out your transportation. Some very bad things happen to people who stumble around MNL with random people that pick them up. As an example, I had an airport staffer arrange a driver for me to a nearby hotel to kill 9 hours on a layover, and he called the hotel to make sure I actually got there, meanwhile, the "trusted driver" who was part of the hotel kept asking me to go to a brothel and suggested something was wrong with me for not wanting to do that. This is what happens when you get a good and reputable driver associated with a known hotel.
