This is distressing to hear, I hope whoever has retrieved the OP's phone will make proper efforts to register it with lost and found or return it.
Of course I left a Kindle behind on a Continental plane and whoever found it kept it and transferred the registration from me to their name with Amazon without any problem (that was before they had password options; Amazon could not give me the thief's contact info because they had to protect their privacy.)

And walked through to immigration with us afterwards. It was all much appreciated.
