Same thing happened to us. iPod dropped inside 4F, and much fishing around resulted in no success. Details taken. Was told that maintenance was called to retrieve the "unidentified item" because strict rules were in place due to Obama visiting that airport that day. Said that plane wouldn't be permitted to depart until it was retrieved.

Many calls to/from BA and airport, but never got the iPod back.
