I am going IST to CDG non-stop on a UA award ticket (this is one leg of a larger routing). Due to routing rules, it needs to be non-stop. Given that you're on UA ticket stock, it's probable that you won't be able to standby for the earlier flight, even if you did somehow manage to land early enough to clear security in IST and make it to the gate before they closed it out.
