Thanks all for the helpful comments! BOS-YOW doesn't work with one way rental award either, and I already have flight booked to YOW, so seems like I will end up with two rentals, YOW-YUL(1000 point one-way award) plus YUL-BOS(thanks to super cheap one-way ~$30).
