You generally have to collect bags at first port of call into us and clear customs and imm. The good old American dance that is a seriously annoying process for everyone. Sometimes (if connecting through US e.g. Lhr to Mia to GCM) they will through check, you get a little sticker for your passport when they do, I guess to let immigration/customs know why you appear to be traveling with no bags for a two week vacation (please follow my colleague sir....rubber glove appears).... Going out of us with a domestic segment, no issue as no customs (unlike uk where everyone wanders through customs if I remember right if that is your final stop).

Thanks to the tips here, I asked for my bags to be tagged through to LAS. It turns out I still have to collect my baggage from the carousel at DFW and re-check it (I thought I might not even have to touch it at DFW). The carousel was quite far away from the arrival gate and luggage took a while to appear. Despite that, was through to Admirals Club in Terminal A, having arrived in Terminal D, in about an hour, in plenty of time for connection. Wouldn't want to sweat a sub-90min connection!!!
