If it's modern history then at a push, I'd suggest a side trip to Kinmen island. It's part of Fujian province, but governed by the "naughty renegade ROC regime" in Taipei. About the only place where ROC forces pushed back the communists. So oodles of recent cold war history. They used to have the world's biggest megaphone through which you could shout insults at the mainland. Both sides shelled each other for ages, at one point taking it in turns.

I stayed a night. There were some great organised cycle tours, but can't remember if they were available in English.
Counts as an internal flight within the ROC (I went with Uniair) so no visa necessary.
