Can we try some hypotheticals on that 'same general direction' guidance?

Let's say I'm trying to redeem AS miles for ORD-SEA. Would Delta ORD-DTW-SEA be acceptable? Would AA ORD-DFW-SEA be acceptable? Does it matter if the AS ORD-SEA segment is available or not? Available at Super Saver rates or not?
