When you arrive in NYC, pick up a copy of Time Out New York at a newsstand (it comes out on Wednesdays, I think) and read the event listings. They have a huge amount of info on museum and gallery shows, book readings and literary events, Broadway and off-broadway shows, nightlife and club options, etc.
