You can go through at your own pace*, and going through the WTMD s-l-o-w-l-y actually lessens the chance it will alarm. Just don't bump up against the sides.
*Note that doesn't exclude that a TSA employee may make up their own rules on the fly. Don't be afraid to ask for a two striper (lead screener) or three striper (supervisory screener).
Being built like a lineback, I often go through WTMDs sideways to avoid hitting the sides. There are a number of times where I've been sent back "to go through straight" so YMMV.
