I've burned a lot of miles over the last 15 years on family trips, but the greatest use of my miles was a few years ago. A friend of mine needed to go from SFO to the east coast for his best friend's funeral, but couldn't afford the last minute fare. I wound up using 50K miles for a ticket in F, and he was able to be there.
