If you used an AmEx card to guarantee the reservation, try calling them. They used to have a policy of protecting card members against walks and how hotels handled them, but I've had no reason to check the details recently.
I have described my specific situation upthread - a reservation was made for me at another hotel in the area, which was inferior to what I had booked, at a lower rate. That property was not acceptable to me. The hotel also told me they would give me the Starpoints I would have earned if i had stayed at their property.
