The Global Entry card isn't necessary; I believe it's used for Canadian border crossings. Some of us who have had GE earlier don't even have that card.
The card is used for entry into the US via NEXUS entry from Canada and SENTRI entry from Mexico. You cannot use a Passport in these situations.
