We are in the early stages of planning our 2013 Fall trip to Maui with our 2 children (ages at the time of travel 7 and 10). e will be there for 10-12 nights. I have been to the Big Island and Oahu but is was back in my college years when I could sleep on planes and 4 connections did not bother me! This time will be much different as my children have never flown and I over the years have become an anxious flyer to say the least. I am trying to do my homework before buying the cheapest/fastest flight there.
I know know that the jumbo jets that are more comfortable do not fly into OGG and I really think we want to fly direct into Maui instead of into HNL so what are my options to fly into OGG? Or maybe flying into HNL on an international configured plane is worth it? I dunno...?

Should we get to the west coast and get a flight out of CA somewhere direct into Maui?
Looks like a UA flight on Saturdays leaves Chicago on a 777 and flies direct into Maui but I believe it is a domestic plane and we will be in economy seats no upgrading here but hoping to book early enough to get the best seats we can...
I know the day of travel there and back is going to stink regardless but trying to do what little I can by flying on a more comfortable airplane or least amount of connections etc...
