I can confirm that you can in fact upgrade outbound and return from separate eUpgrade accounts. My friend upgraded himself YOW-LHR a few weeks back, and was a credit short for the way back. I sponsored him, and he cleared on the return, no issue. I processed the upgrade after he was on the ground at destination.
