I book tickets for my girlfriend all the time (different home airport). We fly segments together when we can but even with getting her to me I have never had a problem. In fact, this is preferred, because the RR points are tied to the RR account, whereas cash is tied to the traveler so if you cancel, that money is tied up in your friend's name.
