I find the hotels on Bath Road (Holiday Inn (LHR, Ariel), Park Inn, Marriott, Sheraton Skyline, Renaissance, Radisson Edwardian) are just as easy to use to get to T1 as the Sofitel or Hilton would be.
If you stay at the Novetel or HI there is a great pub within walking distance....can't recall the name sorry! (maybe the 'plough'?).....you will see it at the entrance to the HI property
