Whether or not you selected the flights individually, they have an obligation to correct a ticket that has an illegal connection once they issue those flights on a single ticket. I suspect part of the issue was calling over the weekend. I've found the caliber of agents tends to drop off over the weekend.
To be fair, the agents kept offering me a much longer connection in Frankfurt but that wasn't what I wanted since I had already made plans for the day based on my original arrival time.
The problem was getting me to CDG at the same time or earlier.
Since I was unable to book a non-stop low-mileage award to CDG when I first did the booking, and I do now in fact have one booked, it was worth the pain and suffering but I really think this could have been done a lot faster.
