Originally I was looking at the $20-$30 range. I can really only afford up to $38 a night. I know this is New York we're talking about but Airbnb was my first and only option, so it set my limit.
If your going to be spending most of your time on Broadway I would stay on Manhattan, even up in Morningside Heights. See if you can get an airbnb (more likely a Craigslist listing) for a student who is not going to be in their apartment for a couple of weeks.
