The only reason I bank miles is for upgrades on flights over 4hrs. Even with the co-pay I think the transcon upgrades are among the best values for awards out there (particularly if you're going to have to buy stickers). However, if you've got tons of stickers and really want to conserve miles then why don't you just upgrade mom with miles (assuming C inventory is even available)?
