Not allowed to rent because of name match on Do Not Rent list

Last night at 11 p.m. I wanted to pickup a three-day prepaid reservation at BUF. When I went to the counter I was told that I could not rent because I was on the Do Not Rent list. The agent told me to call reservations to get further info, who told me that they did not have any ban on file for either my driving license or my card.
I went back to another agent, who at least tried to call customer service himself, but could not reach any competent person (he was told to call back during work hours). I could at least convince him to give me a paper stating their refusal, to have something hard in my hand.
The sheet he gave revealed that V(my last name),J(my first name) with a Hungarian driving license (no number on file for the ban) and street adress of P(NOT my address) is on the list. I was basically banned because my full name (not too common, but not really exotic at all) and country matched that of someone on the list. I had official documentation to show that I live at another address, but that was not enough to "unmatch" me. (Actually, I've never lived there, hadn't even known where that street was.)
Both agents told me that the site manager (whom I haven't seen at all) could still authorize the rental, but (s)he refused to do so.
I desperately needed a car (otherwise I would be stranded at the airport) so I ended up renting something from Budget that is much less apropriate for my weekend trip and costs significantly more than my original rental. I also lost 5000 bonus AA miles that I would have gotten with the Avis rental.

What do you suggest as the best possible action? I doubt I will try renting anything from Avis soon, but it would be nice to at least have the opportunity to do so and not be banned because someone with the same name did some stupidity. Also, besides getting back the prepaid amount of money, I feel that I would be entitled to some more compensation, at least as far as covering my additional costs of renting with Budget.

I will call customer service in the morning, but I do not know if it was better to write them an e-mail or even a regular letter.

Anybody with similar experience or advice?
