I am glad you asked this! A few months ago I was re-booked SEA-YVR-SAN (UA/AC) instead of SEA-SFO-SAN due to a 6 hour MX delay. I ended up not taking it, and taking hotel + compensation because the G/A insisted "I would be fine on this routing, and wasn't sure if I needed my pass port"
