Over the last two months I've been doing weekly runs between EWR and SFO and its not uncommon to see an upgrade wait list with 30 or 40 names on it. My success-rate as a 1K has been less than 50%, and when offered a reasonable buy-up offer online, I take it.
A friend of mine flew the two-class 767-300 from EWR-SFO yesterday and as a Platinum he was #17 on the 50+ upgrade list.
Meanwhile, I flew ORD-RDU last Tuesday morning on an A-320 (largest aircraft on that route) and the upgrade list was 31 people long
It used to be 1Ps at least on high fare classes had a shot on that route.
